At the Well – Are My Motives Pleasing You God?

Today’s Gathering At The Well is all about checking our motives. Here are some of the questions we need to ask ourselves:
Do you go to church to fulfill an obligation?
Do you get involved to get a reaction from someone; possibly pity, recognition or even money?
Do you volunteer in your child’s classroom to analyze the new teacher or is it to help?
Do you share prayer requests for a chance to gossip or because you truly care and are praying?

We justify our actions by appearances; God examines our motives.
Prov 21:2 The Message

Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart
1 Sam 16:7 NIV

I have been a Christian for some time now, and sometimes, things that I do are done on “auto” mode. Do you know what I mean? Like, going to church on Sundays or being part of a ministry or doing good things or being part of a small group are all done because that is what I am supposed to do. Today’s topic has allowed me to do a soul searching.

I know that God always looks at the heart rather than on what someone does or says. It is humiliating that sometimes I just do things without even thinking about it anymore. Forgive me Lord for doing things half-heartedly. Help me to examine my motives daily. Forgive me for acting out from impure motives. May the Holy Spirit convict my daily and help me to refocus on You.

  1. A good wake-up call, to evaluate or re-evaluate.

I think that is one reason why I so enjoy journaling….looking at my thoughts and motives a week ago, to what they are today.

Lord, bring to Light what each of us women participating haven’t realized to align more with You and to have more pure motives, please to You, O Lord.

    Lovingly,
    Yolanda

  2. Perfect verse for today! May we remember that He examines our heart and motives and may they be pleasing to Him alone! Thanks for sharing.

  3. Great verses! It is so easy to get caught up on auto mode.

  4. Laurie Ann says:

Great post! We do need to ask God to take us off auto-mode and to start living in His glory, savoring every minute of serving Him, don’t we? Thanks so much for sharing!

    Precious sister Chris,

I think we’ve all been there! I was saved when I was four and I can surely say that there have been times in my life that I’ve just been in the “good Christian girl” mode and not really participating in the work of the God’s Holy Spirit in my life.

I know that God does everything, not me, but He also says that I am a “living” sacrifice, not a dead one…so I know He expects some participation.

It’s so nice to see you here today at the “well”. Thank you for sharing your heart with us!

    Bless you sister,
    Sunny

  6. Thank you for joining me for todays topic of “Motives”, I love your honesty and all of us can say that sometimes we do things with the wrong motives but thank God for His Grace and His heart changing power! Hope to see you AT THE WELL again…Laurie

Auto-mode is a good way to put it. It feels like we just go through the motions sometimes. Just last Wednesday night I was praying that the church service wouldn’t be just “another” service, but a true encounter with the Living God — and IT WAS.

These were great questions to ponder. I participated in this discussion too.

    Thanks for sharing your heart!

    Love,
    Beth

  8. ouch! I am guilty at times of being an “auto moce” christian. it’s indeed a shame. tnx for the verses. God’s words are indeed “sharp as a two-edged sword.”
