At The Well – Resolutions

Today’s At The Well host is Laura Lee of LauraLee’s Lifesongs. The questions discussed today are:

1. What is your favorite “resolution” in the Bible?

2. Do you do a New Year’s resolution? Why or why not? Does
your family make a resolution together?
3. Usually a resolution comes as a result of regretting
something you didn’t do the year before…how do you let go of the regret and
move forward?
4. (optional…only if you wish to share) Have you ever
made a resolution in the past that you didn’t keep and wish you had?

We were told that we can choose any of the questions or answer all of the questions or just talk about the new year.

The new year always gave me a sense of hope and optimism that “this year, its going to be different!” But somehow, as the new year becomes “not so new”, the optimism wears off. Resolutions or resolving to do things differently have never worked for me. Not being able to keep my resolutions has been a humbling experience for me. It taught me how weak I really am and how much I need God in my life. It opened my eyes to the real “state” of my life as well. I believe that resolutions alone can not help me achieve what God wants me to do or the changes I need to do. Only through the grace of God can real changes happen. I pray and ask for His guidance and leading in my life daily. Little by little I see that goals become reachable and changes happen.

I believe that this year, God has led me to make goals for each month. Instead of making my usual year long resolutions, I am making goals per month.

For the month of January, I have these goals relating to my spiritual life:
– more time to read and study the Bible daily
– join a growth group in our church
– finish reading “Transforming Grace” book
– do at least one act of random kindness and share the love of Christ
– pray for one particular person the whole month
– listen to God more

My favorite “resoultion” in the Bible is Acts 20:24 “I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.”

Awesome goals!!!! What a great idea to break them up in months too! Would work well with the way I’m wired. I love Acts 20:24…beautiful post!

  2. Laurie Ann says

I work better with goals than resolutions, too. I just mentioned to someone else that I love making monthly or quarterly goals and incorporating new ones into the ones I’m accomplishing. Great post!

  3. I, too, am making spiritual goals for my life. I like your monthly idea, it gives God a chance to keep speaking to your throughout the year.
