Speekee TV Review

Ever since my college days, I have always wanted to learn new languages. Now that I have my own kids, it is still a dream of mine that I hope to fulfill, only now I hope to learn together with my kids. Thankfully, as part of the TOS Homeschool Crew this year, I have been given an opportunity to review Speekee!

Speekee is a multi-awarded Spanish language video program aimed for 2-10 year olds. You can view the program in its entirety online through Speekee TV!  It includes 10 episodes of pure Spanish children’s program. It includes Spanish children conversing with one another and at the end of each episode, it showcases some Spanish culture. In every episode, Speekee, Lupi and Dino are the mainstays.  They are puppets who repeats the words and converses with the viewers. There are several songs which are easy to follow along too. The video does include subtitles in English and Spanish.

Every episode answers the question “Where is Speekee going  today?” and that is how you know what you will learn about in each episode. The first episode showcases “El Parque” or the park so the words you will learn about is centered around the park.

My kids, ages 8 and 5, both were very excited to watch Speekee! The puppet, the songs and the kids really got their attention. Because of the repetition of words in every episode, like the basics “Hi” “How are you?” “Thank you”, the kids remembered the words with little effort. My 8 year old writes her own notes while watching and we talk to each other using the words we just learned from the episode. We incorporate the words we learned from previous episodes as well. After 5 weeks of using Speekee, my kids and I could at least understand and speak some basic conversational words.

Every episode is only about 15 minutes long.  Just right for my kids.  We watched the episode for the week at least twice to make sure we got all the words mentioned. Then we try the Speekee Fast Track for the week. This is emailed to us weekly and includes around 4-5 hands on activities you can do with your children. You can also download some activity sheets as well. We no longer did the activity sheets since my 8 year old wasn’t interested in them.

What I really liked about Speekee TV is that you can do the program in your own pace. Depending on the capability of your child, you can go through the 10 episodes in a few months or use it for 10 months. The program will really suit children from 3-7 years of age. If you have older kids, they might find the program a bit too childish or boring. There were some sequences in the episodes which I find too long, like the one where the children go into a tunnel one by one as they proceed to their venue for the day.

If you are unsure if Speekee is for your family, you can try Speekee TV for free for the first two weeks! If you like it, you can get the monthly subscription for $7.50 and annual subscription for $60. If you would rather have the DVD version, you can also check out their website for more information.

Comments

  1. Speekee TV seems to be a great and fun way for children and maybe for adults as well to learn Spanish. I think 15 minutes is just right so as not to get tired with the lesson.

  2. We are having lots of fun learning Spanish. My little ones 8, 6 and 4 love Speekee! We thought the videos were just the right length, too.

  3. Hola Chris, This is Jim from Speekee checking in to say GRACIAS for your review. Much appreciated!
