Cornhole Sweeps the Nation

Cornhole has become a popular game that is being played in backyards and at picnics all across the country. It is thought to have originated from a 14th century German game, and it has gained widespread use over the past 100 years. It has been called a variety of names like Bean Bag, Corn Toss, Indian Horseshoes, and Soft Horseshoes. Today one can find people enjoying this activity throughout the United States.

Part of the appeal of cornhole is that it requires very little equipment to play. All one needs to get started is eight corn bags and two cornhole platforms. One can build their own platforms or order custom cornhole boards from online sites such as Custom Corntoss. It’s a great game for all ages because no dangerous objects are used as with lawn darts or traditional horseshoes. Each bag is made of a canvas material and is filled with feed corn.

Cornhole can be played anywhere including parks, driveways, campgrounds, beaches, and backyards. The two platforms are set 27 feet apart on a level surface. The boards should be facing each other. Each game can be played with either two or four players. Each team is given four bags. Once it is decided who goes first, the teams take turns throwing the bags to the board across form the one they are standing next to. This closest board is referred to as the pitching board, and the players feet cannot go past the front edge of it.

Once a bag is tossed it cannot touch the ground. If it does, it’s considered a foul. After throwing all eight bags the score is added up. Each bag lying on the board is worth one point. Those bags that go in a hole are worth three points each. Whoever scores the highest will throw first in the next round. As the game continues, a winner is determined by which team reaches 21 first with a lead of at least two points. Whoever is the first to win two games will be the winner of the match.

Another reason for cornhole’s popularity across the nation is that not everyone is strict about the rules. Most people play for fun, and will adjust the scoring to suit they’re desires. This makes it fun for all ages at any outdoor get together throughout the country.
